A strong relationship between an expert mentor and a novice learner is at the heart of every apprenticeship for youth. Mentors support, advise, and instruct apprentices on the job, directly affecting an apprentice’s learning and persistence toward completion.
Urban hosted our third interactive mentor training session as part of the Youth Apprenticeship Intermediary Project in April 2023. This session focused on the benefits of formally training experienced workers to be effective mentors for youth apprentices, and considerations for setting up a successful mentor training program. In addition to learning from experts about best practices, the webinar featured substantive discussion among participants to allow for sharing of best practices. In addition to the resources provided from the slides and workbook, we encourage anyone interested in growing their mentoring knowledge to visit the Tools & Resources we’ve compiled and created thus far for the project.
