In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, housing is quickly becoming one of the most important challenges for North Carolina residents and other affected communities as they begin to navigate short- and long-term recovery. In an interview on CBS Mornings, Andrew Rumbach, senior fellow and colead of the Climate and Communities practice area, discussed the challenges families are facing, especially those without flood insurance. The interview highlights a new rapid-response analysis he coauthored that finds fewer than 2.5 percent of households in western North Carolina participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (the primary provider of flood insurance nationwide) and may lack coverage for an event like Helene.
