The days and weeks following a disaster are crucial periods for community leaders. In just a few hours, climate-fueled extreme events like hurricanes and wildfires can disrupt lives and cause billions of dollars in damage. But postdisaster recovery can take months or years and often centers on complex issues like the rebuilding of affordable housing or the revitalization of small businesses and the local economy. The sooner that the public and their elected leaders understand the long-term issues they will face after a disaster, the faster they can design and implement effective policies for recovery.
The Urban Institute’s Disaster Rapid Response project provides high quality data, analysis, and field expertise related to long-term recovery issues in the immediate aftermath of extreme events. Our team of experts—with decades of combined policy and practice experience on disaster recovery—rapidly analyze and interpret predisaster data to help local leaders quickly understand and communicate the potential issues facing their communities. Our analyses also support journalists and civil society organizations who are deeply engaged with local recovery efforts.
