The government shutdown meant uncertainty for the more than 40 million beneficiaries of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Brittany Luse with NPR’s It’s Been a Minute interviewed Urban Institute safety net expert Poonam Gupta about how policy choices contribute to the hunger crisis and how misunderstanding around the program can inhibit its success. “It’s important to think about who’s actually getting SNAP benefits. And 2 in 3 people on SNAP are seniors, children, or people with disabilities.... And among those that can [work], most people do.”
