By collaborating and engaging directly with people who have experience with the focal areas of their work, researchers can improve the accuracy, rigor, and relevance of research, policy, and practice. Developing appropriate strategies to engage people who have personal experience and expertise is key to implementing and scaling effective forms of collaboration, especially in large-scale multistate or national research. This toolkit provides resources to encourage more rigorous community engagement in research projects. In particular, it offers tools and examples for funders and researchers preparing to establish, facilitate, and sustain one such community-engagement strategy—community advisory boards (CABs).
