Writing in response to a request for comment from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the issue of proposed extension of the PRAMS data collection, an Urban Institute expert strongly supports CDC’s proposed three-year extension of the PRAMS data collection. She highlights the importance of PRAMS data to study and monitor maternal and infant health in the US because PRAMS is the only data source that captures experiences before, during, and after pregnancy; supports state-representative estimates of live births in every participating state; and can be linked to vital records. She recommends that PRAMS be kept on a sustainable funding trajectory to support the development of evidence-based policy solutions to improve maternal and infant health outcomes in the US and to track progress towards improving health for these important populations.
