Since its founding in 1968, the Urban Institute has worked with every presidential administration and has been relied on by policymakers across the political spectrum. As a nonpartisan and independent source of evidence, analysis, and solutions, we have long served as a convener, advisor, evaluator, and source of new ideas for federal agencies, the White House, and Congress.

Urban does not have an institutional agenda or take positions; instead, our staff follow the evidence, wherever it leads, to find solutions that work for real people.

As the Trump transition team prepares for the incoming administration, Urban experts offer several recommendations where our work may be relevant to the new administration’s policy goals.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Curtailing public expenditures on Medicaid by providing private-market coverage for long-term-care costs
  • Using market-driven supply-side reforms to lower the cost of housing
  • Reducing inefficiency and waste in TANF block grant spending
  • Fixing the student loan repayment system
  • Strengthening the workforce by expanding employer-driven apprenticeships
  • Improving the efficiency of housing affordability programs
  • Ensuring the US leads the world in deploying artificial intelligence and privacy protections to improve government operations
