In New Orleans, students are not assigned to a school based on their home address but rather can apply through a lottery system to any school in the city. In this report, researchers examined bus routes for 17 charter and district-run schools to understand how far New Orleans students to get to school. The median commute time for the schools studied was 35 minutes by bus, 14 minutes by car, and 47 minutes by public transit. Though driving was almost always the fastest way to get to school, whether transit was better than the school bus varied.
