This brief documents trends in staffing, salaries, benefits, and leadership transitions for Massachusetts nonprofits from 2019 to 2024. For Massachusetts nonprofits, we provide breakdowns by region and size.

Key Findings

  • From 2019 to 2024, Massachusetts nonprofits reported steady growth in paid full-time staff. By the end of 2024, more than half of Massachusetts nonprofits planned to hire new staff in 2025, while 2 percent anticipated layoffs.
  • In 2023, most Massachusetts nonprofits increased their salary spending but maintained their existing benefits spending.
  • Consistent with national patterns, one in five Massachusetts nonprofits experienced an executive director transition in 2023. Midsize nonprofits were especially likely to experience an executive director transition.
