In this brief, we compare published estimates of the impact of the COVID-crisis on renter households. Based on this comparison and newly released data on job loss by state and industry, we model job loss on renter households and estimate the monthly assistance needed to support renters who experienced a recent job loss as well as assistance needed to alleviate rent burden for all renter households. For both estimates, we detail how the amount of assistance differs with and without the supplemental unemployment assistance from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act that expires at the end of July.
