Housing Finance at a Glance is a monthly reference guide for mortgage and housing market data. It includes more than 80 curated and updated figures describing current trends in the US housing finance market, including housing affordability, credit availability, serious delinquency rates, and mortgage insurance activity.

The following trends from this edition stood out most to housing finance policy researchers:

  • Aggregate households’ equity is $35.8 trillion (page 6).
  • Higher interest rates are pulling back refinancing. Mortgage rates have increased from a 2026 low of 5.98 percent in February to 7.24 percent in October (page 9). As a result, the share of agency mortgages that are refinanceable has fallen from 11.5 percent to just 2.0 percent (page 10).
  • The cash-out refinance share of all refinancings has increased, but the refinance volume remains low (page 12).
  • The share of loans in negative or near-negative equity sits at 2.75 percent (page 29).
  • Rising rates are also slowing production: Fannie Mae and the Mortgage Bankers Association project quarterly originations to fall from $550 to $570 billion in Q1 2026 to $450 to $460 billion in Q4 (page 21). Housing starts are forecasted to decrease to 1.25 to 1.30 million in 2027 (page 22), and government-sponsored enterprise net issuance has turned negative (-$39.2 billion year to date) (page 35).
