Housing Finance At A Glance is a monthly reference guide policymakers and industry professionals have used since 2013 to stay informed about the latest mortgage and housing market data. The chartbook includes more than 80 updated figures describing current trends in the US housing finance market, such as housing affordability, credit availability, and serious delinquency rates.
The following trends stood out most to Urban Institute housing finance researchers from this chartbook edition:
- Mortgage rates jumped, driven by the primary risk premium (p. 9 and 36)
- 60.6 percent of agency borrowers are first-time homebuyers, who have higher LTV ratios than repeat buyers (p. 28)
- Aggregate home values have recently stagnated and aggregate housing equity has fallen (p. 6)
- Serious delinquency rates have begun to rise, particularly on FHA and VA loans (p. 29 and 34)
- Secondary spreads priced by dealers have spiked (p. 33)
