Providers of social sector infrastructure take different approaches to supporting the social sector. This discussion guide is for executive directors, CEOs, and other leaders of organizations who want to think strategically about the roles they play when supporting the sustainability, learning, relationships, and influence of the social sector. The purpose of this guide is to help these leaders consider when they want to play a serving role (where they provide supports that meet the current needs articulated by those they serve), a leading role (where they propel those they serve in what they see as the most beneficial direction), or a bridging role (where they cultivate relationships across differences). Often, providers play a mix of all three roles.

This discussion guide is part of a series intended to strengthen the support system for the social sector, which we refer to as the social sector infrastructure. To view other guides geared toward users, providers, and funders of the social sector infrastructure, visit urbn.is/45OyieF.
