Capital flows are important indicators of neighborhood, city, and regional economies. We examined capital flows in New Orleans, finding key strengths but substantial gaps. Among the 100 largest cities in the US by population, New Orleans excels in accessing mission financing. New Orleans also does relatively well at attracting small business investment. However, New Orleans struggles with single-family, nonresidential, and, especially, multifamily investment—the city’s three largest types of capital. In the aggregate, New Orleans is near the bottom third (66th) of the 100 largest US cities. However, New Orleans needs more robust strategies to leverage its mission and public investment to attract residential and nonresidential private capital.
