Home-visiting programs can support parents and families managing the impacts of justice involvement by drawing on the central tenants of home visiting and adapting model curriculum to meet the unique needs of this population. The Washington County Department of Public Health & Environment in Minnesota offers home-visiting services to parents in the county jail. Home visitors facilitate parenting groups using the Circle of Security curriculum, which fosters positive parent-child relationships and fosters healthy attachment.

In this video, nurse home-visiting supervisor, Tyler Roenicke, shares how the home-visiting team supports parents of young children who are in the county jail using the Circle of Security curriculum. We hear from a home visitor and the jail program manager, who describe the need for services in the jail setting and the change they observe in participating parents. Two parents reflect on the impact of incarceration on their parenting journey and how the program has helped them understand how to build a positive relationship with their children.

The video is available on the National Home Visiting Resource Center website. The NHVRC is led by James Bell Associates in partnership with the Urban Institute. Support is provided by the Heising-Simons Foundation.
