ProjectUnderstanding the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program’s Impacts and Policy Design

The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program is one of the most sizable, stable, flexible, and comprehensive supports for community and economic development in the US. The program, administered by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, has provided billions of dollars annually in capital investment to communities through state and local governments for more than a half century. These investments offer a steady source of funding that can be used for a wide variety of activities, such as public facilities and infrastructure, economic development projects, community centers and public services, housing rehabilitation and homeowner assistance, and demolition and acquisition.

Urban has played a leading role in bringing evidence to bear on the program. Explore our publications to learn more about what the CDBG program does and what effects it has on communities.
