Urban Institute’s Community and Economic Development work seeks to create and sustain communities that are rich with opportunity for all. Our work on this portfolio centers reparative and equitable solutions and approaches. These approaches focus on people who have historically been underserved or marginalized by public policies and processes. They promote efforts that are responsive to the needs of people of color, people with low incomes, and other groups that have faced underinvestment in community and economic development initiatives—and who can be central players in driving local solutions. The aim of these approaches is redressing past injustices and mitigating future harms while fostering forward-looking strategies rather than preserving the status quo.
