Homeownership is out of reach for many aspiring first-time buyers, with home prices rising much faster than incomes during the pandemic. High upfront costs, like down payments and closing costs, are major barriers, particularly for households of color and low-income and low-wealth households. While increasing housing supply will help, direct support for buyers is needed now.
