The Urban Institute (Urban), in partnership with Community Catalyst's Center for Community Engagement, formed a Community Advisory Board (CAB) in 2020. Its purpose was to amplify the voices of consumers and caregivers from across the country who have had a wide array of experiences and interactions with the Medicaid program, promoting equity and responsiveness to consumer and community preferences.
The CAB included consumer advocates and individual consumers who have experience with the Medicaid program. With support from Urban project staff and funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the CAB collaborated with Urban researchers, contributing insights to shape research inquiries, interpret findings, and inform research and policy.
The project ended in 2025 after 5 years of the board’s guidance that strengthened the research's salience and impact. Information on lessons learned and how the CAB functioned and its impact on research can be found in: “Six Lessons Researchers Should Know about Partnering with Community Advisory Boards”, “Centering Racial Equity and Community Voice to Improve Research Development, Execution, and Analysis,” and “Centering Community Voices to Improve Disability Research.”
