Developing a Violence Intervention Dashboard for Safer Communities

    Cleveland, OH

Community violence intervention (CVI) approaches use evidence-based, community-driven strategies to reduce violence and make neighborhoods safer. These approaches, which can take multiple forms, have proven successful in reducing victimization among groups at elevated risk for violence, particularly young Black men, who are disproportionately victimized as a result of systemic and social inequalities. CVI models are used in and around Cleveland, but there is no mechanism for sharing resources and best practices across organizations supporting these interventions. This impairs the city’s ability to implement CVI models, making implementation slower and less efficient. Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), a recognized national leader in community-driven safety strategies, has extensive experience developing tools and other resources that help local nonprofit partners support comprehensive crime-reduction efforts. Its Cleveland office is committed to closing the city’s racial health, wealth, and opportunity gaps, and seeks to use technology to expand access to CVI knowledge and resources to reduce community violence.

With Catalyst Grant funding, LISC will partner with Partnership for a Safer Cleveland to design a public-facing dashboard, the Advancing Safety Communication Hub, to enhance and institutionalize CVI efforts. The hub will create a centralized repository of partners, community of practice events, current policies and data, and best practices for providers and partners in Cleveland’s CVI community. It will be easy to update and manage, and users will be able to access information on mobile devices, even in areas with poor cellular service. The project aims to normalize provider use of the hub and, ideally, develop a broader model for use by community-based partners across the country.
