For decades, we have been a critical resource for credible nonpartisan data and insights related to nonprofit and philanthropic activity.
The National Center for Charitable Statistics
For decades, we have provided the public access to research-quality data, and we have published the best available statistics about the nonprofit sector’s growth, finances, and other trends for policymakers and stakeholders.
Charitable Giving Potential
We examine current giving trends to better understand and measure whether there is greater potential to increase the level, efficiency, and overall economic contribution of charitable giving. With our colleagues at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, we provide estimates of the impacts of changes in tax policy on charitable giving. See the updated On Track to Greater Giving dashboard.
History of Philanthropy
Through our History of Philanthropy program, we explore philanthropy's past to gain a better understanding of its present and future. We use historical inquiry to examine philanthropy's relationship with democratic institutions and norms, to analyze philanthropy's place in American society and in global affairs, and to develop insights into philanthropy's successes, failures, and broader impact.
Place-Based Impact Investing
Place-based impact investing is gaining traction among foundations, family offices, and other anchor institutions, and we are conducting surveys, interviews, and content analysis to better understand the opportunities, challenges, and improvements in practices to help the field learn, adapt, and assess its impact.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice Philanthropy
We examine current practice, source insights, and conduct experiments to build the knowledge base about practices that allow foundations to address structural racism, promote justice, and advance equitable grantmaking outcomes.
Nonprofit Sector Regulation
We explore the changing regulatory landscape at the local, state, and federal levels to assess the effects on the nonprofit sector and to inform improvements in regulatory practice.
