We examine current giving trends to better understand and measure whether there is greater potential to increase the level, efficiency, and overall economic contribution of charitable giving. History of Philanthropy

Through our History of Philanthropy program, we explore philanthropy's past to gain a better understanding of its present and future. We use historical inquiry to examine philanthropy's relationship with democratic institutions and norms, to analyze philanthropy's place in American society and in global affairs, and to develop insights into philanthropy's successes, failures, and broader impact.

Place-Based Impact Investing

Place-based impact investing is gaining traction among foundations, family offices, and other anchor institutions, and we are conducting surveys, interviews, and content analysis to better understand the opportunities, challenges, and improvements in practices to help the field learn, adapt, and assess its impact.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice Philanthropy

We examine current practice, source insights, and conduct experiments to build the knowledge base about practices that allow foundations to address structural racism, promote justice, and advance equitable grantmaking outcomes.
