  • Information for Survey Recipients

If your organization has been invited to participate in the National Survey of Nonprofit Trends and Impacts, please read the below information.

Commitment: We hope you will commit to sharing your organization’s story and how it changes over time. The survey takes about 30 minutes, and you can exit and resume later using the link in your email. We may invite you to participate in future web-based surveys once or twice a year to capture changes over time and continue to learn about the important work your organization does. You can opt out of these surveys at any time. To keep the surveys brief, we may also use publicly available information, such as your organization’s IRS Forms 990.

Confidentiality: None of the project reports will include the names of participants or their organizations. We will summarize information in various ways to tell the stories of nonprofits from different angles, but we will protect the identities of the participating organizations. The information you provide will be housed in a secure database. De-identified data without information that could be used to identify you or your organization will be made available for noncommercial research through a Creative Commons license. Identifiable data files will be protected in a secure database and made available only to researchers who can demonstrate they are able to maintain the same standards of confidentiality as the project team.

Benefits: While participation may not benefit you personally, it could benefit your organization. This study contributes to the most accurate portrayal of the nonprofit sector, offering policymakers and funders timely insights into the issues affecting nonprofits on the ground. By following the same group of nonprofits over time, we can track trends. In addition, this year’s survey results will be displayed in a dynamic data visualization, helping readers to see and understand the data and their implications for nonprofits and the communities they serve.

Risks: We do not anticipate that participating in this study will present any risks to you or your organization. None of the publicly available information will include the names of participants or their organizations.

Voluntary participation: Your and your organization’s participation in this study and future follow-up studies is entirely voluntary. You are free to choose not to participate. Should you choose to participate, you can withdraw at any time without consequences of any kind. You may also refuse to answer any individual question without consequences. If you want to stop receiving requests from the research team, please send an email to [email protected] to get your organization removed from the study list, or, at the beginning of the survey, select “no” to indicate that you do not consent to participate in the study.

Questions: Contact us at [email protected] if you have questions or concerns about this project. You can also contact us if you think you have been harmed by the study or if you have concerns about your rights in this project.
