According to the Urban Institute’s American Affordability Tracker, monthly health insurance premiums in Texas are $40 higher than the national average, and 50 percent of Texans lacked the resources needed to cover essential expenses and live securely in 2023, slightly more than the national average of 49 percent. Signe-Mary McKernan, vice president for Urban’s Family and Financial Well-Being Division, spoke with the Houston Chronicle about the implications: “In Texas, even more families are struggling than across the nation,” she said. “Half the population in the state is struggling. That's something to look at."
