For NOTUS, tax and income supports expert Greg Acs discussed how safety net gaps, worsened by funding pressures, are contributing to poverty nationwide. “If people received [safety net] benefits, the national poverty rate would be 34 percent lower,” he writes. Urban Institute research finds more than 40 percent of people in families with an adult working full-time all year can’t meet the true cost of living. “A reimagined safety net must recognize this reality while promoting stable families and rewarding hard work,” Acs stated.
