Our May Data Talk welcomed back Ren Essene and Jessica Russell of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Currently, thousands of institutions report loan-level mortgage data to the public under the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act. Our presenters gave some background and context for this rich dataset, including strengths and weaknesses. They also demonstrated some of the new online tools available for this data. In addition, the Dodd-Frank Act mandates that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau add new variables to the dataset. The speakers previewed some of the proposals under consideration, including potential new variables.
