The Urban Institute, in partnership with the Generations Initiative and Generations United, hosted a day-long event to discuss approaches to federal policy that will meet the needs of – and gain the political support of – Americans of all ages and of many groups.
Capitalizing on the historically unprecedented vigor of our older population and the energy and enthusiasm of their diverse younger counterparts requires thoughtful consideration of our federal, state and local policies and programs. The volume Out of Many One: Uniting the Changing Faces of America released in December 2013 constitutes the beginning of such consideration.
The discussion continued this important conversation by bringing together the authors of Out of Many One with thought leaders and policymakers. Hilary Pennington, vice president of the Ford Foundation and former director of the Generations Initiative, Donna Butts, executive director of Generations United, and Sarah Rosen Wartell, president, Urban Institute will lead the discussion.
Panel topics included:
- New Rules: Realigning Education, Careers and Retirement in the Knowledge Economy
- Civic Engagement: Building Intergenerational Cultural Capital
- Reshaping American Cities: Preparing for Housing and Transportation Demand from Seniors and Millennials
