Nan Astone, an accomplished demographer and senior fellow at the Urban Institute, passed away on June 15, 2018. She brought passion and excellence to her research on women’s empowerment, childbearing, families, adolescence, and youth transitioning to adulthood. Through her work and volunteer service, Astone was committed to helping young people succeed and thrive.
Astone, a former William T. Grant Scholar, received her PhD from the University of Chicago. Before joining Urban, she served on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health for 24 years.
