Ben Kates is a data visualization developer at the Urban Institute. He helps communicate research findings by building data visualizations for Urban features, Urban Wire blog posts, and other Urban products using data analysis and front-end web development tools.

Previously, Kates was a senior data analyst at CompassRed, a Delaware-based analytics consulting company, where he built dashboards and data science tools for clients across various industries, such as health care, retail, and professional services. He led the company’s project work for LabWare, a Wilmington-based laboratory systems company with high-profile clients around the globe.

Before joining CompassRed, Kates was an e-commerce analyst at Burlington Stores, where he built automated reporting of website analytics, analyzed the purchase behavior of hundreds of thousands of customers, and managed personalization and A/B testing programs.

Kates holds a bachelor’s of business administration in management information systems and digital marketing from Temple University and cohosts the Philadelphia Data Visualization Meetup, an affiliate of the Data Visualization Society.
