The potential for modern data science to improve public policy, and through it the lives of millions, is tremendous and growing every day. Still, this potential is largely unrealized. It’s time to catch up.

Alex Engler is a data scientist who works to support various policy centers with statistical methods, data visualizations, and big-data analytics.

Outside his role at the Urban Institute, Engler teaches courses on data visualization and data science in public policy at Johns Hopkins University and Georgetown University. He is also publishing a book chapter on machine learning in policy and governance.

Before coming to Urban, Engler worked in data analysis roles in DC local education, in health policy at the Congressional Research Service, and at the Sunlight Foundation. He holds an MPP from Georgetown University and an MS in predictive analytics from Northwestern University.
