There are three basic parts of preparing to use a framework to develop and register an apprenticeship program.
Identify Job Role and Find the Correct Framework
Start with identifying the job role and then visit the National Occupational Frameworks website and find the framework for the job role you want to develop. Upon finding the framework, spend time reviewing the information to ensure it is the best fit. (Note that many frameworks are also available at www.urban.org/cbof.)
Gather Existing Job Information
Gather the existing documentation:
- the job description for the role the apprentice is training for
- existing new employee onboarding and training plans and materials
- job-specific reference materials, including documented processes, job aids, training, onboarding, etc.
At this point, it is optional to have a well-developed new hire training plan to develop an apprenticeship program. Regardless of the starting point, review the gathered materials and list the elements of any training required or available for new hires today.
Identify the Right Team
It’s important to involve key people in the organization in designing and developing the program. They typically include staff who will be involved in implementing the apprenticeship program, such as
- the person who will be the program manager for the apprenticeship program;
- relevant training and onboarding staff;
- staff who will serve as mentors for apprentices;
- a senior subject matter expert with insight into the job role; and
- human resources, including recruitment staff.
Completing This Step
This step results in a comprehensive outline of onboarding and training in place for the target job role. The outline will be used in the next two steps and by the team of people who are engaged in training and support for the apprenticeship program.
