Older drivers are urged to give up driving and use the paratransit services provided by their local public transit operator to meet their mobility needs. But well-meaning friends and family are inadvertently perpetuating a scam on those older people: most older people won't qualify for those services because they are not seriously disabled, and, the high costs (little of which is paid by the riders themselves) prevent transit operators from offering these services to older people who dont qualify. As a society we have to expand these ADA paratransit services, provide more responsive public transit, and keep older people driving longer safely.
