Presidential Address: Borne of a Renaissance — A Metamorphosis for Our Future

January 1, 2014

Abstract

Robert Santos delivered his presidential address at the 2014 Annual Conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) in Anaheim, CA. Using experiences as a survey statistician and policy researcher, he lays out a general framework for inference from data and uses that to motivate the integration of probability and nonprobability-based research designs for gaining insights and building knowledge. He also weaves in the use of rigorous statistical designs, big data analytics and qualitative research to conclude with a challenge that AAPOR broaden its focus from survey research and polling to a broader, evidence-based quest for knowledge in which rigorous statistical methods represent but one toolset in the broader toolbox of research methods.
