Partners in the National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership (NNIP), a national network of local organizations in more than 30 US cities, help communities use data to shape strategies and investments so that all neighborhoods are places where people can thrive. NNIP partners have decades of experience analyzing local property records and understand their local housing markets and neighborhood context, making them well positioned to explore investor-owned housing and its effects. This fact sheet provides a brief review of past and current work of NNIP partners that are exploring investor-owned housing in their communities, including in and around Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, and Minneapolis. Partners have quantified the prevalence of investors, identified how property conditions vary across owner types, and collected qualitative data to understand residents’ experiences in investor-owned housing. Future analysis could deepen this research in cities where research is underway and expand this research to new places to better understand neighborhood variation, the effect of investors on the housing market, and tenants’ experiences. This could help connect findings across places to inform policy efforts to promote positive investments in communities.
