Why Youth Apprenticeships? Information for Employers
What Is a Registered Apprenticeship Program?
A registered apprenticeship program (RAP) is a proven model of apprenticeship validated by the US Department of Labor (DOL) or a state apprenticeship agency. RAPs offer nationally recognized credentials, quality standards, tax credits, and federal resources.
What Are Youth Apprenticeships?
Registered youth apprenticeships provide opportunities for students ages 16 to 21 in high school and postsecondary education. Apprenticeships combine academic and technical instruction with paid work experience across many sectors, such as IT, health care, and energy industries. In an RAP, apprentices can gain a federal certificate of completion, a professional network, and valuable skills that can help them find a high-paying job in the future.
How Do Employers Benefit from Youth Apprenticeship Programs?
Research commissioned by DOL shows that quality registered youth apprenticeship programs can benefit employers through improved productivity, reduced turnover, increased retention, and so on. According to postapprenticeship surveys, 9 of 10 sponsors would “strongly recommend” registered apprenticeship to others.
My Company Is Interested in Creating a Youth Apprenticeship Program. How Can Urban Help?
The Urban Institute is an intermediary supporting educational institutions, employers, states, and other organizations. We can offer support in many facets of the program, including developing programs, providing training and assistance, sharing resources, and assisting with pipeline development for both employers and apprentices through awareness campaigns or direct collaboration with schools. Although we can help many employers, our focus is on supporting organizations that plan to hire apprentices ages 16 to 21.
Urban can also offer infrastructure support, including building regional, state, and national networks and producing data-based reports on the outcomes and experiences within apprenticeship programs.
If you are interested in starting an apprenticeship program, reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org, and we will contact you to explore your needs, connect you with the appropriate partners, and help launch or grow your apprenticeship program.
