A native of North Bergen, NJ, while at the Urban Institute, she will compare the effectiveness of different rehabilitation and community service models used to prevent recidivism among ex-offenders. | | Kelsey Lyles is majoring insociology and minoring in community development at Howard University. She is from Chicago, IL. This summer, Kelsey will examine the connection between the HOPE VI program and neighborhood crime rates. | | | | Marlene Castro, from Redwood City, CA,is apolitical science and rhetoric major at the University of California Berkeley. This summer, she will evaluate the incentive structure of the standardized testing system under the Race to the Top education reforms. | | Zachary Murray, from Baltimore, MD,is an Africana and urban and regional studies major at Cornell University. While participating in the Academy, he will analyze the distribution of food deserts in urban neighborhoods. | | | | René Crespin is an economics major and psychology minor at the University of Chicago where he is also a Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium scholar. René is from Las Vegas, Nevada and while at the Urban Institute, he will examine Head Start’s short and long-term effects on Hispanic students. | | Krystle Okafor, from Prince George’s County, MD,is majoring ingovernment, politics, and history at the University of Maryland College Park. This summer, Krystle will examine the neighborhood usage and equity in the Capitol Bikeshare program. | | | | Blythe George, our Urban Institute–National Congress of American Indians Scholar, is a sociology major and environment studies minor at Dartmouth College where she is a Mellon Mays and Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium scholar. Blythe, who is from McKinleyville, CA, will compare models of Indian 9-12 education. | | Javier de Paz is a social welfare major and public policy minor at the University of California, Berkley. Javier is from Oakland, CA. Kimberly, who is from Richmond, VA, will explore the connection between neighborhood, school segregation, and educational outcomes. | | Bradley Pough is majoring inpolitical science with a concentration in urban studies at Yale University. From Deltona, FL, Bradley will explore the relationship between race and socioeconomic status in the diagnosis of learning disabilities in Connecticut’s public schools. | | |
