Although Social Security’s budgetary problem is well known, national politicians have been saying and doing relatively little about it in recent months.
A few of the 2008 presidential candidates have offered specific proposals to put Social Security on a firmer financial footing.
Much Social Security legislation introduced in the current (110th) Congress would increase system costs—typically to address the needs of select populations, like disabled workers with terminal illnesses or government pensioners—without addressing the long-term fiscal imbalance.
