Data from the 2002 National Survey of America's Families show that food stamp receipt among welfare leavers rose from 28 percent in 1999 to 35 percent in 2002. Adults' Medicaid and SCHIP receipts increased from 40 percent in 1999 to 48 percent in 2002. 33 percent of families without Medicaid or SCHIP returned to welfare compared with 22 percent of families with this coverage.
