April 25, 2003

Abstract

This 50-state map based on data from the 1997 National Survey of America's Families, describes the variation between states in the proportion of foster children living with relatives compared to foster children living with foster parents who were not related to them. Nationwide, approximately 230,000 children lived in family foster homes with foster parents who were not related to them. About 200,000 children were placed in foster care with relatives after a court had adjudicated them as abused and neglected.
