Registered Apprenticeship

Too many people graduate from college without the right skills for available jobs, with huge amounts of debt, and with dismal career prospects. The college experience is disconnected from the skills that employers demand. In addition, many students drop out of school because of unmet academic and support needs. These challenges affect students’ chances of labor market success.

Registered apprenticeship—which combines classroom training with paid hands-on training and are developed in partnership with employers—offers one solution to these challenges. It is used widely in European countries as a primary strategy for developing a skilled workforce but has been slow to take hold in the United States. Rigorous studies have documented the positive and strong impacts of such programs on employment outcomes. The Urban Institute is working to build further evidence of its effectiveness while supporting the expansion of apprenticeship programs and opportunities across the United States through technical assistance provision and research support.
