About the Authors Freya L. Sonenstein is director of the Population Studies Center at the Urban Institute. Since the early 1980s she has conducted applied and behavioral research related to teenage fertility. She directs the National Survey of Adolescent Males. Dr. Sonenstein has published widely about sexual behavior and contraception among teenage males, as well as about the policies and programs which address these behaviors. Dr. Sonenstein, who is trained as a sociologist, has also served on the faculty at the Heller School, Brandeis University.
Kellie Stewart was a research associate in the Population Studies Center of the Urban Institute during the writing of this book. She has a masters of public health from Johns Hopkins University, with a specialization in population dynamics. Ms. Stewart, a native Californian, worked for a number of years as a patient educator with Planned Parenthood. She is currently serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala.
Marta Pernas is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in social welfare at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to entering graduate school, Ms. Pernas was a research assistant at the Urban Institute, studying issues related to sexual behavior and reproductive health services in the U.S. Ms. Pernas has also performed research on welfare reform in Texas and Florida. Sean Williams, a graduate of Haverford College, is a research assistant at the Urban Institute. He is the data manager for the National Survey of Adolescent Males, and has worked on several projects examining reproductive health among at-risk populations in the U.S. Currently, he is estimating rates of sexually transmitted disease infection among adolescent males.
