Jamie Gorelick, Mary Miller, and Melvin Oliver Join The Urban Institute's Board of Trustees

WASHINGTON, D.C., December 8, 2004A prominent Washington attorney and former member of the 9/11 Commission, a leading portfolio manager and former urban planner, and a distinguished sociologist and educator have been elected to the Urban Institute's Board of Trustees.
Joining the board for three-year terms are:
- Jamie S. Gorelick, a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm of Wilmer, Cutler, Pickering, Hale, and Dorr. Ms. Gorelick, who served on the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, was vice chair of the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) from 1997 to 2003, deputy attorney general of the United States (1994-1997), general counsel of the Department of Defense (1993-1994), assistant to the secretary and counselor to the deputy secretary of energy (1979-1980), and a private-sector litigator. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, she is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and served on the Central Intelligence Agency's National Security Advisory Panel and the President's Review of Intelligence.
- Mary Miller, a vice president of T. Rowe Price Group, Inc., and T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. Ms. Miller, who joined the Baltimore company in 1983, is director of the firm's Fixed Income Group, which manages about $57 billion in assets, and a member of its management committee. Ms. Miller serves on the investment advisory committees for numerous fixed-income mutual funds and is portfolio manager for the Tax-Free Income Fund and several private portfolios. Prior to joining the firm, she was a researcher for three years at the Urban Institute, analyzing the municipal finance issues of infrastructure revitalization. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in government from Cornell University and a master of city and regional planning degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
- Dr. Melvin Oliver, dean of social sciences and a sociology professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. From 1996 to earlier this year, he served as a vice president at the Ford Foundation, where he was responsible for the asset building and community development program. Dr. Oliver taught at the University of California at Los Angeles for nearly two decades, serving as a professor of sociology and policy studies, co-founder and director of the Center for the Study of Urban Poverty, and chair of an interdepartmental program in African-American studies. He is co-author, with Thomas Shapiro, of Black Wealth/White Wealth: A New Perspective on Racial Inequality. He earned an undergraduate degree in sociology from William Penn College and master's and doctorate degrees in sociology from Washington University.
