Fundraising Effectiveness Project

The Fundraising Effectiveness Project (FEP) was started by Urban and the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) in 2006 to help nonprofits measure, compare, and maximize their annual growth in giving. FEP is cosponsored by the National Center for Charitable Statistics at the Urban Institute; AFP; the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University in Indianapolis; the National Committee on Planned Giving in Indianapolis, and other nonprofit sector organizations.

By establishing reporting standards and collecting uniform data, the FEP both provides data for research on effective fundraising strategies and allows individual nonprofits to monitor and improve their fundraising results. A yearly report, facilitated by AFP’s Donor Software Workgroup, helps nonprofits compare their gain and loss ratios to those of similar organizations and provides data organizations need to design smarter fundraising plans. The FEP focuses on "effectiveness" (maximizing growth in giving) rather than "efficiency" (minimizing costs) and has found that nonprofits raise more money by investing in growth-oriented fundraising strategies.

In 2013, Urban, AFP, and DonorPerfect Fundraising Software also launched the Growth in Giving Initiative and the creation of the Growth in Giving Database to help grow philanthropy’s share of the GDP.
