Urban Institute research investigates the practical implications of policy, both domestically and internationally.

In the United States, a variety of research initiatives shed light on where we live. From reviews on art and culture programs to analyses of anti-poverty efforts, the work of Urban Institute researchers touches the lives of everyone. UI also uses its urban base of Washington, D.C., to conduct research that can be applied to cities across the country.

Internationally, researchers can be found in more than 60 countries. Programs range in scope from earthquake recovery lessons in Armenia to government reform initiatives in Zimbabwe, with special focus on the practical implications of institutional analyses. The Institute has also leveraged its visibility to form partnerships, such as the Transition Policy Network created in conjunction with Budapest’s Metropolitan Research Institute and Moscow’s Institute for Urban Economics; the partnership has grown to include ten regional members.
