— McNulty, Robert, and Laura Tan. Mobilizing the Arts and Cultural Resources for Community Development. Washington, DC: Partners for Livable Communities, 2005. (PDF file) Because of its essential role in tourism, the importance of the cultural sector in rebuilding the New Orleans economy is obvious. To function effectively in this role, arts and cultural organizations need many of the same financial resources that the business community needs and that are laid out in some of the cultural plans listed above: loans, credits, technical assistance. But arts and culture also have a vital role to play in rebuilding and sustaining New Orleans neighborhoods, communities, and civic life. Arts and cultural organizations help communities find and project their voices in the public sphere. In this role, arts and cultural organizations need different kinds of resources: engaged artists, healthy community-based organizations, strong cultural sector alliances, cultural planning, and places to regularly connect with policymakers. This toolkit provides models for building up and sustaining the essential elements of civil society in the cultural sector, assets that will enable arts and culture to contribute effectively to long-term community rebuilding. | << Arts and Culture |
