Amanda Mireles is a Research Assistant in the Metropolitan Housing and Communities Policy Center at the Urban Institute. Since arriving at the Urban Institute, Ms. Mireles has worked on a variety of policy topics including the Moving to Opportunity (MTO) final evaluation, DC Promise Neighborhoods Initiative (DCPNI), and the new Housing Opportunities and Services Together (HOST) Demonstration.

Ms. Mireles graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with High Honors in Sociology from Princeton University. She received Certificates of Proficiency in African American Studies and Latino Studies and is the recipient of the 2011 Isidore Brown Thesis Award for her work exploring the effects of class-based approaches to childrearing on measures of achievement. While at Princeton, Ms. Mireles, a Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) and Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow (MMUF), also worked on research examining immigrant transnational organizations and poverty in the suburbs as a research assistant for the Department of Sociology.

Publications

Zone 126 is a nonprofit neighborhood organization in Queens, New York City that was awarded a Promise Neighborhood planning grant from the US Department of Education in 2011. The Urban Institute developed a neighborhood survey for residents of Astoria Houses, a public housing development in the Zone 126 neighborhood, to support Zone 126's needs assessment and planning process. Zone 126 used results from the survey to inform the initiative’s family and child-centered programming. This report summarizes the methodology and findings of the survey and provides the survey instrument and sources of survey questions.

In October 2010, the DC Promise Neighborhood Initiative (DCPNI) became one of 21 recipients of a US Department of Education Promise Neighborhood planning grant. The Urban Institute partnered with DCPNI to act as the data analyst and local evaluator of this ambitious initiative. The Needs Assessment and Segmentation Analysis are intended to provide a timely understanding of the needs of the community and to inform the continuum of strategies developed by DCPNI and their workgroups.
