Reggae to Rachmaninoff: How and Why People Participate in Arts and Culture (Research Report)
Christopher Walker, Stephanie D. Scott-Melnyk

The research presented in this report provides new information about how and why people participate in arts and culture that has important implications for how arts and culture providers and supporters, and people engaged in community building attempt to reach and involve their publics. The findings are based on a broad definition of arts and culture that encompasses attendance at any live music, theater, or dance event, or seeing visual art either in a museum or gallery or in another place not necessarily devoted to presenting art. Community Partnerships for Cultural Participation: Concepts, Prospects, and Challenges : Early Findings Report (Research Report)
Christopher Walker, Elizabeth T. Boris, Maria Rosario Jackson, Stephanie D. Scott-Melnyk

This is the report on the first year of the Urban Institute's evaluation of the Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds' Community Partnerships for Cultural Participation Initiative. Nine community foundations received funding to work toward "broadening, deepening, and diversifying" participation in arts and culture over five years. We discuss: the framework we are using to understand and evaluate community foundations' performance; the strategies arts and culture providers use to enhance cultural participation; how funders and others within the arts and culture system can support arts and culture providers; and the role of community foundations as intermediaries in local arts and culture systems.
