This is one of a series of four reports based on a study of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) performance of African American students in the United States. This report focuses on individual background characteristics of students: race, gender, family income, and parent education. Data used comprise test score and survey information of all African American SAT takers in 1996 and a random sample of white SAT test takers for the same year.

This is one of a series of four reports based on a study of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) performance of African American students in the United States. This report examines the effects of several factors--social context of the school, school size, school resource measures, and academic focus of the school--on SAT performance. Although the report focuses primarily on students in public schools, it includes a separate estimate of the association between attendance at private and Catholic schools on test performance.
