Managing Mandatory Savings Plans: Implications of Foreign Experience (Research Report)

This report outlines the administrative arrangements for individual-defined contribution accounts used in several countries and comments on some of the implications for the United States. The issues that must be addressed in any individual account plan are reviewed, and the approaches used in each of eight other countries are described. The report concludes with some observations about implications for the current debate in the United States about adding a system of funded, individual-defined contribution accounts to the Social Security system.
