Discrimination in Metropolitan Housing Markets: Phase 2 - Asians and Pacific Islanders (Research Report)
Margery Austin Turner, Beata A. Bednarz, Carla Herbig, Seon Joo Lee

This report presents results from the second phase of the latest national Housing Discrimination Study (HDS2000). The national results presented here for Asians and Pacific Islanders are based on a sample of 11 metropolitan areas that account for more than three quarters of all Asians and Pacific Islanders living in metropolitan areas nationwide. The study finds that Asians and Pacific Islanders face significant levels of discrimination when they search for housing in large metropolitan areas nationwide—levels of discrimination similar to that of African Americans and Hispanics.

CHA Relocation Counseling Assessment: Final Report (Research Report)
Susan J. Popkin, Mary K. Cunningham, Erin B. Godfrey, Beata A. Bednarz, Alicia Lewis, Janet L. Smith, Anne Knepler, Doug Schenkleberg

This report offers the first systematic look at what happened, from 1999 to 2001, as the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) began implementing an ambitious 10-year plan to demolish most of its high-rise buildings and relocate in the private rental market as many as 6,000 residents participating in the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program. Former residents of CHA apartments who moved to private-market units report substantial improvements in their overall well-being, but providing effective transition and counseling services to CHA's remaining residents--many with complex needs--is the key to getting more people into private-market housing.
