As the District of Columbia’s housing market continues to take off, residents face enormous challenges in finding housing they can afford. In response, the District, through the Housing Production Trust Fund and other resources, is investing in creating new affordable housing and preserving existing affordable housing. Preservation is particularly important because many of these assisted properties would be difficult or impossible to replace if they lost their affordability.

The Urban Institute and the Coalition for Nonprofit Housing and Economic Development (CNHED) released a new online tool, the DC Preservation Catalog, that will help the District and its residents identify and track assisted housing that may need intervention to preserve affordability. The Preservation Catalog, a comprehensive database of assisted housing in DC, has been used by the DC Preservation Network to devise and coordinate preservation strategies for the past eight years. These data will now be accessible to everyone through a new interactive, map-based website.

The release event included a demonstration of the new Preservation Catalog website and a discussion by an expert panel.
